Travel Gift Wish List – Top Ten

As my birthday approaches in early April I began to think of the things or experiences that might belong on a travel gift wish list, if I were to make one. Here they are, from the ridiculous to the possible.

1) A Residence On Residensea’s The World: I first heard about this residential cruise ship ten years ago when working in the corporate incentive industry. The goal was to create a luxurious cruise ship with a community feel where residents would create a floating neighbourhood and sail unforgettable itineraries throughout the globe. Opportune destinations included Melbourne for the Australian Open, Monaco for the Grand Prix and everything in between. Who wouldn’t want to live on such a ship or experience such luxury? However, I have heard recently that the residents became wary of short-term visitors for safety reasons and lack of calibre so I have decided I can do without. Still, if someone offers me a unit at $600,000 and pays my $60K/month fees I’m sold! http://aboardtheworld.com

2) Papua New Guinea Tour – $10,000: Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River lures adventurists, naturalists and anthropologists from all over the world. An expedition up the river is an exploration into unspoiled nature, culture and even humanity itself with some native peoples only recently emerging from isolation. Checkmark, can’t wait! Excellent scuba diving is a definite plus as well.

3) G Adventures Antarctica Trip Incl. Flight – $8000: Acclaimed Toronto based G Adventures really knows their stuff when it comes to enriching cultural experiences. Not many do Antarctica nor do it well; G Adventures does. Roundtrip flight from Toronto to Southern Argentina plus the tour will run you about $8000 per person.

4) Canon Super Wide Angle EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM Autofocus Lens – $1998: Next up on our list of tech stuff, a wicked wide-angle lens perfect for capturing the gorgeous destinations on our lists. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/519474-USA/Canon_2045B002_Super_Wide_Angle_EF.html

5) The Arcteryx Beta SL (colour – Passion Fruit) Raincoat – $350: I was contemplating not purchasing a raincoat because there haven’t been many instances in my past travels where I wish I had one but there were two in Borneo where it definitely would have been nice. I also find that Muslims aren’t great fans of the wet t-shirt look on women. This is now officially on my list to buy before departure. The Arcteryx Beta SL in Passion Fruit is a beauty. It is super lightweight, packable, and has a built-in storm hood. Perfect for hikers. http://arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?language=EN&gender=Womens&model=Beta-SL-Jacket-W

6) Skydiving with Skydive Toronto – $350: I’m adventurous and terrified of heights, but, I am also about facing my fears. If I can now scuba dive with sharks I can sure as hell jump out of a plane. Graciously, a friend of mine and instructor with Skydive Toronto has offered to treat us sometime in May. Can’t wait! http://www.skydivetoronto.com

7) Day2Night Convertible Heels – $200: I swear I came up with this idea years ago and like most people I did nothing about it. Hats off to these ladies who created a women’s heel that converts from a kitten heel to a high heel. I might backpack but I make sure to bring a sexy dress, a great pair of jeans and high heels. These items may add unnecessary weight when I might enjoy them only once per month but regardless I feel like I’m classy for that evening and one wouldn’t necessarily know that I’m a tourist. I think every woman should pack a pair of heels because there is nothing worse than a woman in flip-flops in a bar or club. Plus, they just makes you feel good!

8) Pickpocket Proof Convertible Pants for Women – $150: First let me say that this pant is on drawing board. Currently existing for men (purchased for Matt) it is not yet out for women. Over the past few years I had read about pickpocket proof pants perfect for travellers but had yet to try them. And, most of us are familiar with convertible pants that unzip to become shorts. I for one have always disliked them but I checked them out while at The Great Adventure Show a few weeks ago and have realized just how utilitarian they would be. I’m disappointed to not be able to buy a pair and look forward to their debut. http://clothingarts.com/pickpocket_proof_pants_convertible_travel_pants

9) Anything and Everything Lululemon – $70+: I’ve never been a fanatical Lululemon wearer but on my trip to the Philippines I realized that many of the pieces I had were Lululemon and their versatility covered me well in many situations. My love and adoration for Lululemon furthered when I began exercising in their gear at home. Now Matt is a fan!  http://www.lululemon.com

10) Aquabells – $70: I think I saw these dumbbells on Oprah once and thought how great for travelling when working out in your hotel room. Fill them up with water to your desired weight and deflate for travel. Perfect! http://www.aquabells.com/welcome.html
